SYNOPSIS

Jesse Denton, a trans man, left his family, their compound, and the family curse behind 10 years ago. But when his grandmother asks him to come home, Jesse and his family realize just how much he’s changed. A chance encounter with a teen runaway, Jesse’s transition, and the family’s curse all force them to reckon with what family means to them.

CASTING

  • All actors will receive a $150 stipend for their participation.
  • We plan to cast BIPOC actors, trans and nonbinary actors, and actors with disabilities as much as possible.
  • All interested actors are encouraged to audition, regardless of experience, physical type, or gender expression.
  • Actors aged 16+ will be considered.
  • We are interested to know what accessibility needs you may have so that we can make the audition, rehearsal, and performance spaces safe and empowering for you.
  • All actors will be asked to use a southern accent for the reading.
  • Jesse will be played by a transmasc performer. All other roles can be played by actors of any gender identity.
  • Casting will be partially dependent on actor scheduling conflicts. No new conflicts can be added to the calendar after a role has been offered.
  • We will be using southern accents for the reading. We will have resources and some time to practice this as needed.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Actor feedback and input on the script throughout the process will be critical, so we are looking for artists who are willing to communicate constructively and openly about the play. Our playwright will be present throughout the process, making adjustments as we go. Our commitment is to serving the writing process.
  • Because this is a workshop of a work-in-progress, audience feedback may be part of the process. No public recording of the public reading will be made available.
  • You will not need to memorize any material. The text may evolve and change as we go throughout the week.
  • The play contains explicit and intense conversations about child death, AIDS, murder, assault, transphobia, and homophobia.
  • There are instances of transphobia and/or homophobia spoken by the characters, as well as the use of profanity.
