Durham Theatre Workshop is a new staged reading series in Durham, NC. One step beyond a living room reading, this opportunity will provide feedback from audiences and collaborating artists spending time with the piece. Over the course of 2026, we hope to produce up to four of these staged readings. This year will focus on plays by or about transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals.
Each playwright selected for the series will have the opportunity to hear their work read by local actors. Playwrights will receive actor and director feedback, a moderated audience feedback session for those attending in person or audience feedback forms for those participating remotely, and a recording of the performance. Selected playwrights will also receive a year subscription to www.playsubmissionshelper.com.
Selection of the pieces will be based in part on availability of actors and the ability of Assorted Arts to provide a useful developmental experience. We do not have the ability to produce musicals or plays that rely heavily on music. All playwrights will hear back from us, but please be patient with us since this is a new endeavor. Once the application has opened, we will review submissions on a rolling basis and select plays no later than one month before the scheduled reading.
Readings will take place at People’s Solidarity Hub in Durham, NC on the dates below, with 2-3 rehearsals in the week leading up to the reading. Playwrights are welcome to attend the second and third rehearsals if they are able.
